Oddkinn is Lex Elias. I open with this photo because he described his music sibilantly as “singer-songwriter shoegaze”. It is a very full sound, mostly produced by the myriad of pedals and effects through which he plays his guitar.
The music definitely has a blurry quality, so I’m glad I chose a slower shutter speed.
Lex’s brother Joseph played drums tonight, but made a point of designating himself as “not Oddkinn”. He was not blurry either.
I liked the sound both with and without drums. It will be interesting to see what becomes of it.
Cinematic Jazz, they call it. It all begins with a bass line, and then the magic happens. Whether it comes from the Magic Sandbox is uncertain. All I know is that I like it.

For 30 years, Tucson was home to Black Sun Ensemble. Founding member and driving force of the band Jesus Acedo died last year, as the band was finishing their most recent album. They will go on under the name Cobracalia, which comes from one of BSE’s songs.
