Oddkinn

Image

Oddkinn is Lex Elias.  I open with this photo because he described his music sibilantly as “singer-songwriter shoegaze”.  It is a very full sound, mostly produced by the myriad of pedals and effects through which he plays his guitar.

The music definitely has a blurry quality, so I’m glad I chose a slower shutter speed.

Image

Lex’s brother Joseph played drums tonight, but made a point of designating himself as “not Oddkinn”.  He was not blurry either.

I liked the sound both with and without drums.  It will be interesting to see what becomes of it.

Thy Odd Birds at KXCI Studio 2A

Cinematic Jazz, they call it.  It all begins with a bass line, and then the magic happens.  Whether it comes from the Magic Sandbox is uncertain.  All I know is that I like it.

Cobracalia at KXCI

For 30 years, Tucson was home to Black Sun Ensemble.  Founding member and driving force of the band Jesus Acedo died last year, as the band was finishing their most recent album.  They will go on under the name Cobracalia, which comes from one of BSE’s songs.

Saint Maybe

Saint Maybe are a Tucson Duo who play a self-described “dark night of the soul ambient storytelling” kind of music.  I enjoyed them and recommend a listen.  They will be playing at the Art On Tap event at the Tucson Museum Of Art this weekend.

The Jazz Stacks

Image

KXCI Tucson has one incredibly impressive collection of vinyl, topped off by some 8000+ jazz albums donated by  a listener.  Not a whole lot of jazz gets played at the station these days, but on Sundays from 12-3 PM, Mark Rosenbaum digs deep in to the stacks for his Jazz Sundae show.  Stream it live from KXCI.org
