In 1857 120+ men, women and children traveling west from Arkansas were killed at Mountain Meadows by Mormon settlers, Indians, and the territorial militia, under orders from the LDS church leaders.  It was more than a century before the LDS church acknowledged that the event took place and erected a memorial.  The motive is unclear.  More details here:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mountain_Meadows_massacre
