Just North and East of Monument Valley is the lesser-known treasure, Valley of the Gods. I drove the 17 mile unpaved loop winding through majestic rock formations without seeing another soul. A far cry from the heavily commercialized Monument Valley.

In 1927 Blanche Russel was driving past Vermillion Cliffs when her car broke down and she had to camp for the night. She liked it so much she bought some land and stayed, building a stone house in the shelter of a giant boulder.
A crew works to clear a derailed Union Pacific freight train at 16th & Toole. No-one was injured, and the derailed cars were empty at the time of the accident.
On the edge of Capitol Reef National Park there was once the town of Giles. Now all that remains is a cemetery, mostly populated with new replacements for old stones, and this intersection.
Removed from context, and deprived of symmetry, a flower becomes an alien landscape.
