we left tuxtepec at 7 this morning in the rain, and headed up into the mountains for the 200 kilometer, 4 1/2 hour drive to oaxaca city. fog and rain almost the whole way, but it was completely magical. winding up into the mountains at speeds rarely over 35 mph through thick thick jungle with virtually no traffic, occasional views of spectacular vistas and patches of blue sky. a small capita at the top, with about twenty seats inside facing a shrine. tall, mossy pine forests farther inland, and finally blue sky as we drove into historic oaxaca. we’ll be here for three nights, sampling the many varieties of mole, among other things 🙂
